Cardenden School in the 1920s

I’ve created an index of the school’s admission register covering the years 1920 to 1929. The register itself contains the names of 1000 pupils. You can download a copy of the index via the publications heading on the right side of this page.

Childhood Illnesses

A number of pupils had to leave the school due to illness and return at a later date once they had recovered, in some cases multiple times due to the severity of their conditions. David Wood provides one such example, during his 3 year struggle with hip disease he was absent from the school for over a year and a half at one point. Then there is Alex Fraser. Due to the operations he required and his recurrent fevers he left and was readmitted to the school 3 times in all, with the end result being that he left the school in March 1923 having failed to qualify due to being ‘over age’.

Leaving School

The official school leaving age during this time period was 14, pupils often ended up leaving earlier than this however. One notable event relates to a Roman Catholic school nearby in Bowhill, which was scheduled to open on the 6th December 1926. Three days before that 23 pupils left Cardenden School so that they would be free to enrol there instead. A more common cause of early departures was simply the pupil’s family moving, most often locally to other nearby towns, although several pupils went further afield to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and America.
