Fife's ground-breaking four wheely bin system has received an award for innovation and improvement. The team behind the implementation of the new system were presented with the award at the Fife Partnership Excellence Awards in the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes.

The four-bin system has now been rolled out to 65,000 households, and is expected to be in place through most of Fife by the summer of 2014. These households now use three dedicated recycling bins for paper, cans and plastics, and garden waste, as well as a smaller landfill bin, which has led to a 50% reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill.

The Excellence Awards have been running for 12 years. They were established to recognise and celebrate the creativity, innovation and performance of teams across Fife’s partner organisations.

Chris Ewing, Senior Manager for Sustainability, said: “We are delighted to have won the award and gain recognition for what is a truly outstanding achievement. Thanks to the efforts of householders on the four bin system, and the hard work of all the council staff involved in delivering the service, we are now seeing a recycling rate of over 65% compared to 55% for the rest of Fife. Over the next 18 months we will be offering the four bin service to the remainder of households in Fife. Once again, I would like to congratulate householders and staff alike for their success.”

Cllr. Pat Callaghan, Executive Spokesperson for Transport and Environment at Fife Council, said: “This is a very well-deserved award. Reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill is a real priority for us as a council, and that’s exactly what we’ve achieved with this project. Moving to four bins and fortnightly collections was a big change for people but it’s been a great success story, and has made everyone more aware of how they can help make Fife a cleaner, greener place. I would like to echo Chris in congratulating everyone involved in this fantastic achievement.”
