Moving On to Adult Life Event 2012

Archived news: published on Wednesday 11 Jul 2012 by Fife Council

A free drop-in event aimed at young people aged 14 - 25 with additional support needs and their families will take place on Saturday 1st September from 10.00am - 3.00pm in the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes.

There are lots of choices and decisions to be made when moving on from school into adult life.  Having access to up to date information and advice can make this easier.  Building on the success of the event held last year which was attended by over 120 young people, carers and support staff, this event will highlight what is happening in Fife and the options and supports available.  A wide range of organisations and voluntary groups providing information and support around transition from teenage to adult life will be represented.

Last year one carer said: "we benefited from having organisations in one room and being able to meet face-to-face and collect information."  Another added: "the workshops were excellent and informative."

At this year's event there will be opportunities for young people and carers to share their experiences of moving on from school or college and ideas about how this transition process can be improved as well as information on the support they need to make good lifestyle and personal choices.

Families will have the opportunity to provide feedback on a new "Moving On" website which has been developed to provide a range of information to families as their son or daughter plans their journey from school to adult life.

Leisure activities for the young people and workshops for carers will run from 11am on a first come, first served basis.  Workshop themes include -

  • Self Directed Support
  • Day Service Modernisation
  • Welfare Reform and Money Matters
  • Legal Matters - your rights and the law
  • Social Work, Education and Health Transitions
  • Health Promotion - healthy eating, exercise and sexual health.

This event will help contribute to a smoother transition process by providing up to date and timely information which families can use to make informed decisions and choices about the future.
