Holidays and leave
Everyone needs time away from work. The UK law lays down some minimum rules for paid leave in the Working Time Directive. Our terms and conditions of employment include rights to annual leave and public holidays.
In addition to normal holidays we all have special events and problems in our lives that make access to leave important. Leave may be needed to cope with bereavement, for jury service, for Territorial Army duties, to care for a child or simply to wait for a tradesman to call. Some of these require employees to book annual leave; others have special policies that apply.
We have discretionary leave policies that provide advice on compassionate leave, parental leave, special leave, and time off to care for dependants. There are guidelines that explain the entitlements applicable in various situations and the procedures to be followed. Discretionary leave for some reasons may be paid and for other reasons may be unpaid.
