Fife is commited to creating strong, thriving communities where people can expect a quality of life that comes from living in a safe environment. This contributes to 'Improving community safety' which is one of Fife Council's 'Big 8' priorities.
National road safety practice in recent years has focused as much on education and awareness raising as it has on engineering and enforcement. Fife's current Road Safety Action Plan for Fife 2012 – 2015 (available from the publications section on this page) recognises Fife has been very successful in reducing casualties in recent years, exceeding the targets set for the year 2010, which makes reducing them further an even greater challenge. This new strategy considers how we aim to meet that challenge. More information on both National and Local Road Safety is available here.
Traffic Management
Traffic growth in the UK has been rising rapidly over the last twenty years, which has put an increasing strain on the the Kingdom's roads and town centres. Transportation Services carry out monitoring of the road network and promote alterations to improve safety and efficiency for all road users including creating a greater share of road space for pedestrians, cyclists and for public transport. This is achieved through a variety of measures such as engineering schemes, traffic regulation orders, traffic calming and the provision of crossing facilities.
