COVID-19 booster programme

The JCVI has advised a second COVID-19 booster dose for higher risk individuals, to be administered in the spring.

This is being offered to:

Residents in a care homes (from mid-March)
Eligible Housebound patients (from mid-March)

The following groups will be also be offered a second, spring booster:

Individuals aged 12 years and over who are immunosuppressed
Adults aged 75 years and over

Individuals in these groups should have received appointment letters by mid/late March.

This spring booster must be given a minimum of 24 weeks after the initial booster vaccine dose.

COVID-19 vaccination

If you have missed your opportunity to have a COVID19 vaccination or missed your booster vaccine appointment, you can still attend a drop in clinic or book an appointment.

Which groups are currently eligible for a Covid booster?

We are currently delivering first, second and booster doses of the COVID vaccine through our network of vaccination clinics across Fife.

You are eligible for a Covid booster if you have received your second dose a minimum of 12 weeks previously, and meet the following criteria:-

You are aged 16+

If you are aged 12-15 and have an underlying health condition or living with someone who has an underlying health condition. We will shortly also be offering second booster doses to Fife’s care home residents, housebound patients and adults aged 75 and over. Fourth doses of the Covid vaccine will also be offered to those who are severely immunocompromised. Vaccination by cohort arrangements

Patients are reminded not to call their GP practice for updates to enable those requiring urgent assessment to be seen as quickly as possible.

Housebound patients

Eligible housebound patients will be offered a second COVID booster in the coming weeks. This will be carried out by Fife’s Immunisation Team and will contact housebound patients to arrange a home vaccination visit.

Housebound individual’s have been identified through GP lists in March 2022. Housebound patients will be phoned prior to visiting; they will be asked about their Covid status and current medical status.

Please note that resident is deemed to be housebound when they are unable to leave their home environment through physical and/or psychological illness.

Immunosuppressed or extremely clinically vulnerable patients

Immunosuppressed individuals in Fife will be shortly be eligible for a fourth dose of the Covid Vaccination, 24 weeks after their third dose. The fourth dose in important in helping to provide long term, sustained protection against the virus.

Letters will be issued to those previously identified as immunosuppressed and /or extremely clinically vulnerable inviting them to an appointment at vaccination clinic as close as possible to where they reside.

Can I get a vaccine if I am pregnant?

Why should I get my Covid Booster vaccination if offered this year?

Boosters for flu and COVID-19 are the best way to protect people who are the most vulnerable to serious ill-health from these conditions.

Is it too late for me to get vaccinated against Covid?

No – You can still arrange to get vaccinated as part of our open access services if you would like to get your first, second or booster dose of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine.

You can attend these services if you would like to get your first, second or booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine. For example you:

• only recently became a resident in Scotland
• have become newly eligible by turning 12 years of age
• didn't attend when invited earlier this year but would now like to get vaccinated
• had your first dose and have not had any further doses (e.g you may have moved address, moved countries or recently had coronavirus)

When can I get my Covid booster?

You cannot receive your booster until a minimum of 12 weeks since your second dose.

Will I get an appointment for my booster jab?

Only those most at risk of the effects of Covid receive a blue letter. Anyone aged 59 or under is asked to a to self appoint using the NHS Inform portal or attend a drop in clinic, after the appropriate period of time has lapsed since your last Covid-19 vaccination.

What should I do if I need to rearrange my existing appointment?

If you do need to rearrange your appointment you can do so online at NHS inform. If you do not have online access you can also call the National Helpline on 0800 030 8013.

What booster vaccination will I be offered?

Pfizer

The booster vaccine offered will be Pfizer, regardless of the vaccine you received in your two previous doses.

Where will I get my booster vaccination?

Most people will attend an appointment at one of our vaccination centres, located across Fife.

Can my 5-11 year old be vaccinated against Covid19?

Yes there is now a global offer for 5 - 11 year olds. Appointments are available starting on 19th March. These will arrive in a blue letter and will include rescheduling options. All eligible siblings can be brought to the appointment to be vaccinated at the same time.

What if my 5-11 year old is Covid positive?

In this case they will have to wait 12 weeks after which they can book an appointment or attend one of our regular 5-11 drop in clinics on Saturday mornings.

For immunosuppressed children and children at risk, the period is reduced to 4 weeks.
