Assistant Director of Research and Development Dr Amanda Wood, who is retiring after 19 years with NHS Fife, has helped to develop and shape the Department from small beginnings with just two members of staff, to a service of over 30. The Department coordinates a wide range of research studies, from international multi-centre drug trials to short-term student projects.
Dr Wood’s vision, drive and determination has been integral in highlighting the importance of research for both patients and staff, and has resulted in opportunities for patients to access an array of research studies and for NHS Fife staff to develop and enhance their clinical skills as well as making important differences to the care and treatment that patients receive.
Dr Chris McKenna, NHS Fife Medical Director, said: “Amanda has made a fantastic contribution to clinical research within Fife over the years, and many strong links to institutions and academic partners have been made thanks to her hard work.
“Effective patient care has always been at the heart of the Research and Development Department’s work, ensuring that a wide number of different kinds of research were possible in Fife.
“Recently we have seen the relevance of that research, with Fife clinicians playing an important role in the RECOVERY Trial, a UK-wide research project looking at potential treatment options for patients with COVID-19.
“It is fitting that we name our Clinical Research Facility at Victoria Hospital after someone who is not only a highly respected colleague, but has played such an important role in the development of research within Fife.”
Alex Baldacchino, Director of Research and Development, added: “NHS Fife has a growing reputation as a centre of research and innovation excellence, and in the recruitment and retention of high quality clinical research staff.
“Amanda’s contribution has been fundamental in establishing that reputation and she will be greatly missed.”
