Sean is a Consultant Paedatrician and has been recognised for his enormous contribution and influence in the world of clinical education - particularly in the development and delivery of the Newborn Life Support education course. His groundbreaking research on heart murmurs at birth has also influenced newborn examination over the last 25 years. Dr Ainsworth said that he was deeply honoured to be nominated for honorary membership of the Resuscitation Council UK and noted that the nomination reflects not only the work that he has put into newborn resuscitation but also that of the team of doctors, nurses and midwives who teach on NHS Fife’s Newborn Life Support course with him. He pointed out that the course is a multi-disciplinary one, just like real-life, and would not work without input from all.

Since 2003 when the course was set up they have trained nearly 1500 people, the highest number for any NLS course in Scotland. Queries about places from people across the country is testament to the quality of the course that Sean and the team delivers.

In 2018 the Scottish Government made attendance on a newborn resuscitation course compulsory for midwives. NHS Fife now has the highest number of midwifery instructors and, in turn, the highest percentage of midwives who have attended a formal newborn resuscitation course across Scotland."
