Step on stress

A three-week course aimed at helping people better understand and manage the symptoms of stress is being expanded into Glenrothes, St Andrews and Cupar.

Step on Stress, which is free and open to all adults on a self-referral basis, launched in 2012 and was originally piloted in Dunfermline and West Fife, before being expanded into Kirkcaldy and Levenmouth in 2014.

Step on Stress begins by examining the impact of factors including diet and sleep on mood and offers simple lifestyle tips to start tackling stress straight away. The course also looks at how stress can affect both mind and body, providing relaxation techniques to help deal with worries.

Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology, Mandy McAlpine, said: “Whilst its sources can vary, stress is an extremely common problem and impacts a large number of people. However, despite being widespread, stress can start to become a real issue if we don’t have the tools to deal with it or shake it off. By recognising its early signs and learning how to effectively manage them, you can tackle stress before it takes hold. There are also lots of simple things that we can do to help; basic changes in lifestyle like cutting down on caffeine or alcohol can help reduce the physical symptoms of stress and help you sleep better, and exercise is also a great way to burn off nervous energy and help alleviate physical symptoms.

“I am delighted that Step on Stress in now widely available across Fife and I would encourage people who may find it useful to book online at www.moodcafe.co.uk or call 01383 565442. You will also receive a free CD containing lots of different relaxation exercises plus information on controlling worries, helping you to sleep better and lots more.”
