The newly constructed NHS Fife Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is located within the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.  This purpose built facility is designed to enable high quality research.

Managed by NHS Fife R&D Department, the CRF draws on NHS expertise through dedicated governance staff, research nurses, pharmacy staff and other support departments.  It provides a dedicated 104m2 facility for a range of healthcare and life science related research activities.

NHS Fife offers a unique research environment combining a rich mix of research assets in clinical and academic interests, with access to an under researched population and high quality R&D support infrastructure.

The CRF is a modern 104m2 facility comprising:

  •  Patient waiting area
  • Nurses’ hub/meeting room available for monitors
  • 4 fully equipped outpatient consulting rooms
  • Sample preparation area with facilities for processing and storing blood samples including a range of freezers (-20oC to -80oC) and centrifuges.
  • Secure storage
  • Independent access via lift/stairs

 The close vicinity and working relationship with Victoria and Queen Margaret Hospitals ensures access to specialist departments and facilities including medical physics, blood science laboratories for analysis of specimens and the radiology department for imaging.


Working With Business

The CRF provides a wide range of clinical research and health related services to commercial organisations and contract research firms, participating in multicentre and single site trial activities.

Services on offer include:

  • Clinical trials
  • Epidemiological studies
  • Specialist Research Consultancy

Additional business services can include fitness and health checks, clinical monitoring and health orientated focus groups.

 NHS Fife R&D staff can provide support and consultancy advice on trial design, ethics applications, study feasibility, pharmacy, protocol design and patient recruitment strategies with health related data to identify/screen for potential participants.

Research collaboration with NHS Fife is a key operational feature of the facility which has to date undertaken projects across a number of fields including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, ophthalmology, palliative care, and mental health.  The facility also has close links with physicians in the region with expertise in other clinical fields.
