The NHS Fife Psychology Service provides a wide range of clinical services; these are arranged into 8 clinical specialities. Some services are located in community or primary care settings; others are hospital-based. Staff working within the Psychology Service include clinical psychologists, counselling psychologists, cognitive behaviour therapists, clinical associates, health psychologists and nurse therapists.

Details of how to be referred are included in the description of each service.

Confidentiality

Your psychologist/psychological therapist will write to the person who referred you to us. Usually this is your GP but if it was some other health care professional (e.g. a Psychiatrist) we would normally write to that person and to your GP. The psychologist will write to the referrer at the beginning and end of treatment, and in between as required. This is important so that s/he and your doctor know what each person is doing to help you.

As part of good clinical practice all clinicians receive regular clinical supervision. This involves discussion of any cases where the psychologist/therapist wishes to discuss issues relating to work with a particular patient, family or carer. Such supervision consultations are held in private and are confidential.

The only situations in which it may be necessary to breach confidentiality are those where your therapist has concerns that you or someone else may be at risk of serious harm. In almost all circumstances, your therapist would discuss this with you in the first instance. Other than that you will not be discussed with anyone else without your permission.
