Labour and Birth
Welcome to our Maternity Service at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. We are a Baby Friendly accredited Hospital and our team of highly skilled staff aim to provide you with safe, effective, women-centred care throughout your pregnancy.
Once you have booked with a midwife, your care may be midwife led or consultant led depending on your circumstances further along in your pregnancy. You will have choices over the birth of your baby and we will aim to fully support your choices. Low risk women can give birth in our Midwife Led Unit, or women in this category can choose to have their baby at home. For higher risk pregnancies, we have a Consultant Led Unit for mothers and/or babies who require a more attention. Should your baby require extra medical attention, it will be looked after in our Special Care Baby Unit, which again is staffed by a team of highly trained staff who have a wealth of experience in caring for newborns.
Your stay with us may be brief. In the case of low risk pregnancies you can expect to be in the Midwife Led Unit for 6-24 hours . Or if you fall into the higher risk group and are in the Consultant Led Unit you may be with us for 1- 3 days on average, although early discharge from the CLU depending on your circumstances is also possible. However long your stay, we will endeavour to guide you through the journey to becoming a mother and a family as supportively as we possibly can.
