The orthotic service carries out assessment, prescription and supply of orthoses (external devices also called braces or splints) to:


  • improve function and mobility
  • reduce pain
  • correct alignment (prevent unwanted movement)
  • protect an injured part


The term orthosis covers a wide range of products for both upper and lower limbs, such as:


  • insoles
  • footwear
  • ankle braces
  • knee / leg braces
  • wrist / arm braces
  • spinal braces
  • collars


The orthotics service sees patients from a wide range of specialities but not limited to:


  • Paediatrics
  • Orthopaedics
  • Neurology
  • Rheumatology
  • General Medicine
  • Care of the Elderly
  • Diabetic
  • Podiatry
  • Physiotherapy
  • Oncology



You can be referred to the orthotics service by your G.P. or other health professional. You will receive a letter to opt in and book an appointment.



The orthotics service is based in Queen Margaret and Victoria Hospitals with clinics held at Cameron Hospital.

The department is located in the Orthopaedic Out-Patient Department (signposted Out Patients Waiting Area 5) on level 1 of the older hospital building. The office is on the right of the waiting area.
