Improving Services

The NHS in Fife is working to improve services with the involvement and support of the public, our partners in other NHS Boards, Fife Council and voluntary agencies. We will continue to inform and consult local people at the earliest possible stages on all developments.

As a large rural area with varied geography and several centres of population, there are particular challenges to meet the health needs of the people of Fife. The strategic aim has been to develop, with our partners, particularly Fife Council, integrated services accessible in as many localities as possible. Services are being enhanced and the skill mix of staff is such that more problems can be dealt with without the need for onward referral.

Our emphasis in health promotion is on helping people to stop smoking and to create a culture which prevents people from starting, addressing the health problems of alcohol abuse, encouraging healthy lifestyle through weight management and health initiative as well as improving sexual health. Material on these developments and services is available on the website and via associated links.

Our new wing at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy was opened in January 2012 to patients and staff. It houses all our acute services including A&E, Children’s Unit, Maternity Services, Intensive Care and Surgical and Medical Wards.

Adamson Hospital in Cupar has also recently redeveloped for the local community. The redevelopment was a mixture of new build and refurbishment which included a new Physiotherapy Department, Out–Patient Department (containing a Minor Injuries Unit and Treatment Room), In-Patient Ward, X-Ray Department, Rehabilitation area, Administration offices and a Child Health Unit situated on the new first floor.

Work is underway to reconfigure services at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline. We are developing a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre for Fife.
