Child at Doctors

Community Paediatricians provide a specialised service to children and young people with a range of special [educational] needs, developmental disorders and disabilities.

The service has a responsibility to all children [up to 19 years] through the Education and Children's Acts.
 
It provides assessment, diagnosis and follow-up of children with Special Needs including:
  • children in need; 'at risk';  'in care';  'disadvantaged'
  • chronic ill health
  • emotional/behavioural difficulties
  • hearing impairment
  • learning difficulties
  • physical difficulties
  • visual impairment
 
It refers to, and liaises with, any other agenices involved:
  • Health: e.g. hospital specialists; GPs; health visitors; school nurses; therapists; dental services; child psychology; child psychiatry; communtiy learning disability nurses
  • Education: e.g. teaching staff; educational psychologists
  • Social Services: e.g. social workers; respite care staff
  • Voluntary Services: e.g. society/support workers.
 
Appointments are arranged at various health centres, clinics and child development centres across Fife.
 
Referrals or requests for advice are accepted from any multi-agency professionals including GPs.
 
The service is Consultant led, with each Community Paediatrician having responsibility for a defined geographical area. In addition, staff see children in a number of specialist clinics including neuro disability, follow up of low birth weight infants and autistic spectrum disorders.
