Postnatal Care page
Staff will support, educate and advise you about caring for yourself and your baby.
After the birth, you may be transferred to the Post Natal ward or sent home directly from the Labour Ward after about 6 hours. We promote and encourage early discharge from hospital.
You and your baby will be checked by the midwife and other staff to make sure you are recovering well from the birth.
Your baby will have a thorough examination and a hearing test usually before going home.
A Community Midwife will visit you at home for up to 10 days or longer if necessary after which your care will be handed over to the Public Health Nurse. The days the midwife visits will be agreed between yourselves and she may ask a nursery nurse to visit you if appropriate.
After your discharge from hospital and up to day 10 you can call the Postnatal Ward for urgent advice if you feel you cannot wait for the midwife to visit.
We provide infant feeding support in the hospital after your discharge and you are welcome to attend these sessions. There is a breast feeding telephone helpline also available. We have achieved Baby Friendly Accreditation Status.
