What is Healthy Eating?

It appears that every week there is a new health alert relating to a food, so who should we believe?

The clear message is that there are no unhealthy foods only unbalanced and unhealthy diets.  So the real healthy eating message is about getting the balance right and eating the right quantities of foods from the four main food groups in order to lead a healthy lifestyle. No single food provides all the nutrients we need, so it is important to include a wide variety of foods in the diet.

Eating a healthy diet should start from the moment we begin to feed our babies and should become part and parcel of our daily lives that way we can reduce the risk of developing some of the major diseases associated with a poor diet.

8 Tips for Eating Well

  • Base your meals on starchy foods
  • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables
  • Eat more fish – including a portion of oily fish each week
  • Cut down on saturated fat and sugar
  • Try to eat less salt – no more than 6g a day for adults
  • Get active and try to be a healthy weight
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Don’t skip breakfast
