Our service strives to understand the true impact of the continence issues on each of our patients and their families and provide support accordingly. We aim to respond to each child’s physical, psychological and social needs.
What we treat
Each month we provide around 32 clinics, across 9 different Fife locations in order to provide support to young people with day and night time wetting symptoms. Following an initial assessment appointment which lasts around 60 minutes; review appointments are generally provided every 6-12 weeks or more frequently during alarm treatment times.
Physical examination
In order to identify if there are any physical causes for wetting or soiling, a physical examination should be carried out by a GP, doctor or advanced nurse practitioner in the first instance. Physical issues can then be treated. If there are no physical causes a referral to the Children and Young People's Continence Service can be considered if the child meets the referral criteria.
For daytime wetting: if the child is 5 years of age, or age 4 and due to start school within 6 months and resides within the boundary area of NHS Fife.
For nocturnal enuresis: if the child is between 5-18 year and resides within the boundary area of NHS Fife.
Soiling clinics
In addition to the clinics mentioned above, we provide 8 clinics per month to support children with soiling issues. Following an initial face to face assessment much of the ongoing support is done by telephone, in response to feedback from families on the most effective and convenient way to offer this service. Support may be offered initially every 1-2 weeks; with extended periods between reviews as appropriate.
