Enuresis
The Children and Young People’s Continence Team (Nurse-led service)
Referral via SCI gateway, by Medical staff.
All children from 5-18 years with nocturnal enuresis should be considered for referral.
The child should have a history of wetting at least twice a week for a 3 month period.
Constipation, urinary tract infection and diabetes should be excluded by medical staff, and treated if identified. Referral will be considered 3 months after successfully treated.
They must reside within the boundary area of NHS Fife.
Day time wetting
The Children and Young People’s Continence Team ( Nurse Led Service)
Referral via SCI gateway, by Medical staff.
All children from 5 years of age, or age 4 and due to start school within 6 months with daytime wetting may be considered for referral.
The child should have a history of wetting at least twice a week for a 3 month period.
Constipation, urinary tract infection and diabetes should be excluded by medical staff, and treated if identified. Referral will be considered 3 months after successfully treated.
They must reside within the boundary area of NHS Fife.
Soiling
The Children and Young People’s Continence Team (Nurse led service)
Referral via SCI gateway, by Medical staff.
Referrals will not be accepted without evidence of having used the NHS Fife paediatric constipation guidelines.
All children, with a developmental age of 4 or over, who have symptoms of soiling, toilet avoidance, or stool withholding may be considered for referral to the Children and Young People's Continence Service.
Anal rectal abnormalities / neurogenic bowel / obstructions must be excluded. Anal fissures and tears identified.
Constipation must be treated if identified.
They must reside within the boundary area of NHS Fife.
Constipation
Acute Paediatric Services
(P-ANP & Medical staff service)
Referral via SCI gateway
Referrals will not be accepted without evidence of having used the NHS Fife paediatric constipation guidelines.
Refer children <1 yr after 4 weeks of optimal treatment (softener and stimulant) if not responding.
Refer children >1 yr after 3 months of optimal treatment if not responding.
Refer children with faecal impaction who fail to respond to disimpaction regimens.

Referral by any health professional involved with the child by completing the appropriate referral form and supporting documents in full
NB. From 1.10.22, due to a change in legislation, Continence products will only be considered for children over the age of 5 years of age, when toilet training is not achievable.
Containment products will not be supplied for treatable medical conditions, such as bedwetting, constipation or soiling.
They must reside within the boundary area of NHS Fife.
Toilet Training
Currently there is no service to support toilet training in Fife.
