6 Step Plan

There are six simple steps to setting up your Travel Plan

Step 1Create a Travel Action Group (TAG).  This group should include pupils, staff, and parents. The TAG can also include members on the local community e.g. councilloror community police officer.  Did you know that your school travel plan can contribute to your application for becoming and Eco School?

Step 2Surveys.  To establish your current travel modes we have designed a simple online survey for pupils, staff and parents/guardians/carers. Our pupil/parent/guardian/carers survey can be carried out as a home work task.  Did you know that the majority of pupils surveyed over the past year stated that they would prefer to have a more active way of travelling to school? (Please see example of these surveys in the links provided below)

Step 3Mapping Exercise.  Your school travel plan coordinator will provide the school with maps for every class to plot their current journey to school. The TAG will analyse these maps and plot the four major routes taken by pupils on their journey to school.  A copy  of this must be then sent to your travel plan coordinator.(Please see the mapping example provided in the link below)

Step 4– Route Audit.  Once your mapping exercise is complete and your travel plan coordinator will arrange for a member of traffic management to come along and meet with the TAG and walk the four main routes identified.  They will then prepare a report of measures that should be taken to make the journey to school safer for all.  This exercise will take about 1 hour. (Please see the route audit example provided in the link below)

Step 5Action Plan. From the information you have gathered with regards to current travel modes, preferred travel modes and your route audit report you then create a plan of actions that you believe will make the journey to school safer and more pleasant for all.  Your travel plan coordinator will assist and advise you. (Please see the action plan example provided in the link below)

Step 6Travel Plan .Your travel plan coordinator will provide you with a template document that you can drop your findings into and once your plan is written up it will then be approved by Transportation Services within Fife Council.  Your travel plan coordinator will then discuss with the group how to launch your plan.  Did you know that these six steps link directly to the delivery of the Curriculum for Excellence Health and Well Being Framework? (Please see the example below of a well developed School Travel Plan)
