Court fines - supervision of payment

When you receive a fine the Court may allow you time to pay your fine.

The instalments may be set in weekly or fortnightly amounts.

If you miss one instalment you may have to appear at a Means Enquiry Court to explain why you have failed to pay your fine.

The Court may allow you further time to pay or reduce your payments or impose a Supervised Attendance Order. This scheme aims to reduce the number of people in custody for the non-payment of fines.

The intention of the scheme is to substitute a fine with a specific amount of time carrying out unpaid work that benefits the community.

The number of hours of an order can range from 10 to 100 and reflects the level of the fine. Those who fail to follow the requirements of the order will go back to court and can be sentenced to a period in prison
