New community sensory room
Youngsters with additional support needs have been given their own sensory haven, thanks to funding from Fife Health Charity.
A bespoke sensory room within Gordon Cottage Child Development Centre in Kelty was funded thanks to a generous grant of £12,000 from the charity.
Gordon Cottage is one of two Child Development Centres in Fife, and plays host to services provided by NHS Fife for pre-school children with additional support needs.
And although based in Kelty, the Gordon Cottage Centre helps children from across Central and West Fife.

Created a sensory and calming experience
Transformed a room into a wonderful place
Staff applied to the charity for a grant to transform a room in the Centre into a wonderful, special place where children would find stimulation, but also where others could find calm if they needed it.
Thanks to the funding, a complete metamorphosis took place – from the layout of the room and the installation of soft flooring and mats, to new colour changing lighting to ensure the best possible environment was created to support the welfare of the children.
To finish off the room in style, new sensory toys were installed, including bubble lamps and light boxes which have proved popular with all the young visitors to the service.
My child loves being in there. The room is a wonderful space for the children to settle if they are upset or just need to calm down. It’s a lovely space with lots of sensory toys, which makes such a difference.
Lisa Finlayson, Senior Team Leader, Children and Young People’s Community Nursing Service, explained: “The room was completed in January 2024 and since then, it’s been fantastic to have such a beautiful and happy environment for the children.
“At Gordon Cottage, we work in partnership with parents and carers to promote each child’s individual development and our sensory room plays a vital role in that, as well as being a fantastic space for improving health and wellbeing.”
And one of the staff team added: “It’s a really useful room.
“It can help to stimulate a child but it can also help to calm a child who is overwhelmed and upset.
“It is really beneficial for children with complex needs.”
This wouldn’t have been possible without the funding we received from Fife Health Charity and everyone at Gordon Cottage would like to thank all the charity’s supporters for the difference they’ve made to us all.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the Children and Young People’s Community Nursing Service and the parents and children who use this amazing facility. Your donations enable us to fund meaningful projects like this, transforming clinical spaces into environments that uplift and inspire.
Please consider supporting Fife Health Charity to help us continue bringing the arts into our hospitals for everyone’s benefit.
