Queen Margaret Hospital Hospice Garden

What: A courtyard area at Queen Margaret Hospital has been revamped into a therapeutic garden space for hospice patients

Where: Accessed through Phase 2 Main Entrance at Queen Margaret Hospital, the courtyard is near to X-ray, on level 1.

Why: To provide patients with a peaceful, outdoor space in which to spend time with relatives and friends

How: Queen Margaret Hospice garden Group designed and created the area

How much: £42,000 from the Endowment Fund with additional funds raised by Queen Margaret Hospice Garden Group

The creation of the fully accessible garden has been a collaboration between NHS Fife and the community-led Queen Margaret Garden Group. The unused courtyard space has been transformed into a dedicated therapeutic garden for hospice patients and their friends and families. It has been designed with pathways, seating areas, a memory tree and sculptures. It also contains two shelters large enough for a bed to go under. Local businesses have also supported the initiative.

A Therapeutic Environment in Theatre Recovery

Project: A life size mural of a beach to provide a calming environment to patients as they recover from theatre

Where: Recovery ward in theatre, Victoria Hospital

Why: The mural was to help patients feel calm and relaxed as they came round from surgery

How: Painted by therapeutic artist Karen Masters after consulting patients

How much: £1200

Senior Charge Nurse Shirley Emery wanted to create a more tranquil environment in the recovery ward so that patients felt more relaxed and calm after their operations. Shirley contacted Karen Masters who specialises in consulting staff and patients to determine the design of the art work. Karen then painted the wall after ensuring infection control requirements were met and the building owners, Consort, supported the project.
