Mary was educated at Dunfermline High School, the University of Edinburgh, and as a postgraduate at the University of Stirling, where she obtained a Masters in International Conflict and Co-operation. She has worked as a journalist, arts critic and editor throughout her career, and has had a varied career in education, community work and the arts, as well as in politics. She has always had a keen interest in Public Health, and in the regulation of Health Professionals, and has been Performance Assessor for the General Medical Council since 1997.
