Before making any decisions, NHS Fife recommends that you:
- Speak to your own dentist before you travel. They know your dental history and can help you understand your treatment options.
- Check that the dentist and clinic are appropriately qualified and regulated in the country where you’ll receive treatment.
- Ask plenty of questions about the procedure, costs, aftercare, guarantees and what happens if complications arise once you return home.
- Find out who you can contact for advice or follow-up care after your treatment.
Remember that if treatment goes wrong overseas, arranging corrective treatment can be complex, costly and may require further travel. NHS Scotland is under no obligation to provide pre and post-operative care other than emergency care.
If you attend an event in the UK promoting dental treatment abroad, make sure any dental advice or assessment is provided by a dentist registered with the General Dental Council.
Taking time to research your options and asking the right questions can help you make a safe and informed choice. To help you make an informed choice, you should ask:
- what are the benefits?
- what are the risks?
- what are the alternatives?
- what if I do nothing?
