Consultant ophthalmologist, Dr Andrew Blaikie has been commended by University of St Andrews Students Union at their recent 1413 Teaching Excellence Awards.
Dr Blaikie, who is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews, was the winner of the Outstanding Academic Mentorship category. The award was given in recognition of Dr Blaikie's exceptional commitment to nurturing the academic and personal growth of his students, and where he had enriched the experiences of students and fostered an environment where they could thrive.
The awards are student-led, with nominations and selections made by student panels, ensuring that the recognition reflects the impact on the student community.
No stranger to winning awards, Dr Blaikie was also celebrated at the Scottish Health Awards last year, where he received the Global Citizenship Award for his work to improve eye health in Africa and more recently was elected to the board of the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and appointed honorary Professor at the International Centre of Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
These awards acknowledged Dr Blaikie’s pioneering work in implementing the Arclight, a solar-powered, ultra-low-cost diagnostic tool that is broadening access to eye care in low-income countries, and which has quickly become an invaluable tool for healthcare workers in NHS Scotland too.
