NHS Fife is proud to be investing in the workforce of the future, with around 100 Modern Apprentices supported across the organisation during 2024–25.
Modern Apprenticeships are playing an increasingly important role in building a skilled, sustainable NHS workforce by combining hands-on training in the workplace with formal education. These roles are now firmly established as a valued career pathway within NHS Fife, offering opportunities both to new recruits and to existing staff who want to develop their skills and progress in their careers.
NHS Fife’s pharmacy and medicines directorate has appointed 20 Modern Apprentice positions in the past year. These apprenticeships support the training and recruitment of pharmacy support workers and pre-registration pharmacy technicians - roles that are essential in supporting the safe and effective delivery of medicines and clinical services across hospital, community and primary care settings.
Director of Pharmacy, Fiona Forrest, said: “Modern Apprenticeships have become a very successful route into our pharmacy service, offering structured, supported development for new and existing staff. As we continue to transform how we deliver pharmacy services across NHS Fife, these roles are helping us to build the workforce we need - skilled, confident, and ready for the future as well as freeing up time for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to provide direct patient care.”
Modern Apprenticeships also reflect NHS Fife’s wider commitment to workforce development and its role as an anchor institution, creating training and employment opportunities that benefit the wider Fife community. NHS Fife remains committed to growing and supporting a diverse and skilled workforce – and Modern Apprenticeships are a key part of that journey.
