NHS Fife is launching a new public awareness campaign encouraging people across Fife to take up the potentially life-saving screening tests they are offered, highlighting the vital role screening plays in detecting conditions early and improving outcomes.
The campaign brings together information on a range of screening programmes available to people across Fife and directs the public to find out more and take action.
Screening programmes in Scotland include:
- Cervical screening
- Breast screening
- Bowel screening
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening
- Diabetic eye screening
Screening is a key part of preventative healthcare across NHS Scotland. It is designed to identify people who may be at higher risk of developing a condition before symptoms appear, allowing earlier diagnosis and treatment.
Early detection through screening can significantly improve outcomes for people, and in some cases prevent serious illness altogether. For example, screening can identify cancers at an earlier stage, when treatment is often more effective, or detect changes that can be managed before they develop into more serious conditions.
The campaign aims to remind people that screening invitations are an important opportunity to protect their health and should not be ignored.
Dr Olukemi Oyedeji, Consultant in Public Health Medicine in NHS Fife, said:
“Screening is one of the most effective ways we can protect our health. By taking part when you are invited, you are giving yourself the best chance of detecting potential problems early, often before you notice any symptoms.
“We know that early detection can make a real difference to outcomes, including improving treatment options and saving lives. I would strongly encourage anyone who receives a screening invitation to take up that offer.”
The campaign will run across digital channels, including social media, and is designed to maintain awareness and support wider public health activity across Fife.
People are encouraged to visit the NHS Fife screening page (www.nhsfife.org/screening) to find out more about the tests available, who they are for, and how to take part.
