Being bullied can be very frightening and distressing for a child or young person. It can make them feel bad about themselves, lowering their confidence and sense of self-worth. This can make it very difficult to talk about, and they may not know what to do about it. It can be distressing for families as a whole and dealing with these experiences can be difficult. If you have concerns about your child being bullied, it may be helpful to discuss these concerns with school.
These resources may be helpful when thinking about how to support a child or young person who is being bullied:
- Childline - Bullying and cyberbullying
- RespectMe - anti-bullying support for parent/carers, children and young people
- Citizens Advice Scotland - advice for parents about problems at school
- YoungMinds - Bullying advice for children and young people
- For some young people, the impact of bullying can have lasting effects, even after the bullying has stopped. Extra support from the School Counselling Service might be helpful, and young people in P6 and above can be referred. Counselling is available for high school age and art therapy is available for primary school age. Please contact your child’s school if you would like to talk about this. The service is provided by DAPL.
