LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning. The “+” is used to include the wide range of other sexualities and gender identities.

Identifying as a member of the LGBTQ+ community does not mean that a person has a mental health disorder. However, they can be at higher risk of mental health difficulties for lots of reasons, like discrimination, social exclusion, social disadvantages, or rejection.

Supporting a young person as they explore their gender identity or sexual orientation can feel overwhelming, but there are lots of supports available. It can also be helpful to find out about language in the LGBTQ+ community, the words and phrases used, and what they mean for young people.
