There are many reasons why a child or young person might not want to go to school.
Anxiety is often thought to be the main reason, but it’s really important to think about what is driving this anxiety, e.g. bullying, difficulties with learning, sensory needs, speech and language difficulties, problems at home. If the causes can be identified, this will help make it easier to find solutions.
When a child or young person avoids school, this not only affects them, but it can impact the whole family and increase stress levels. If you notice that your child is starting to show signs that they are struggling with going to school, please speak to school directly about this, so that a supportive plan can be put in place.
