Our services and how to access them

Continence products

NHS Fife Bladder & Bowel Service (BABS)

Referral by any health professional involved with the child / young person by completing the appropriate referral form and supporting documents in full.

NB. From 01.10.22, due to a change in legislation, continence products will only be considered for children over the age of 5 years of age, when toilet training is not achievable.
Containment products will not be supplied for treatable medical conditions, such as bedwetting, constipation or soiling.

Day time wetting

Daytime wetting can include frequent urination, urgency or dribbling. Children and young people aged 5-16 years, or age 4 and due to start school within 6 months with daytime wetting may be considered for referral to the Children and Young People’s Continence Service. We are unable to accept referrals postpartum.

Referral to the Children and Young People's Continence Nurse Led Service is made via SCI Gateway by the GP or Medical Staff.

They must reside within the boundary area of NHS Fife.

Enuresis

Children are generally expected to be dry by a developmental age of 5 years. Enuresis is a term used for children and young people with bedwetting.

Enuresis is a medical condition which should be treated in children from age 5 years. Children and young people aged 5-16 years who experience enuresis may be referred to the Children and Young People’s Continence Service.

Referral to the Children and Young People's Continence Nurse Led Service is made via SCI Gateway by the GP or Medical Staff.

They must reside within the boundary area of NHS Fife.

Toilet avoidance

Most children will be able to move their bowels into a potty or toilet by a developmental age of around 4 years. If the child is beyond this age and within 6 months of starting school with symptoms of toilet avoidance they may be considered for referral to the Children and Young People’s Continence Service.

If the child is experiencing symptoms of constipation, including soiling / stool withholding then please contact your GP for further advice / treatment. Our service is unable to support children with chronic constipation.

Referral to the Children and Young People's Continence Nurse Led Service is made via SCI Gateway by the GP or Medical Staff.

Toilet training

Currently there is no service to support toilet training in Fife.
