When will the new service be available?

This pilot service will be launched in Fife from the end of August 2026. An opening date will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Until that date patients should continue to access care via existing routes as outlined below in right care, right place.

What is the Walk-In Service?

This is a pilot service run by NHS Fife and Fife Health & Social Care Partnership.

It is one of a network of GP walk in services being funded by the Scottish Government to improve access to primary care.

Who can use the service?

From the end of August the service will be available if you are registered with a GP in Leven, Methil, Buckhaven and Kennoway as part of this initial pilot. From September / October 2026 we plan to expand the service at Randolph Wemyss Memorial Hospital to all Fife residents registered with a GP. Further information will follow regarding this.

Access is being limited initially to ensure the service is safe and effective for patients and staff, but patient demand will be regularly reviewed.

How the service works

Eligible patients can use the walk-in service if they have an urgent, non-emergency health concern, cannot attend their usual GP practice and need to be seen that day.

From the end of August 2026, the Walk-In Service at Randolph Wemyss Memorial Hospital will be:

Open Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm - no appointment needed.

Depending on clinical need, you may see a GP or Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

At weekends and public holidays, please continue to phone NHS 24 on 111 for non-emergency but urgent health concerns where you will be triaged and directed to the most appropriate place for the care you need.

This service is right for you if:

You are registered as a patient with a GP Practice in Fife (Leven, Methil, Buckhaven and Kennoway).
You need to be seen today, and  your condition is not an emergency.

Examples of  urgent medical  conditions the Walk In Service can help with:

New pain or fever

Suspected chest, throat or ear infection

Acute or new urinary symptoms

Skin conditions (rashes or infections)

Muscle, joint or back pain

Stomach or bowel problems

Headaches or dizziness

Flare-ups of existing conditions (e.g. asthma)

This service is  not  right for you if:

You have an emergency (such as chest pain, suspected stroke, heavy bleeding, or severe breathing problems) - Attend A&E or call 999
You have a minor injury (sprains, suspected broken bones, or minor burns) - Call NHS 24 on 111
Routine management of long-term or pre-diagnosed conditions (e.g. routine reviews or repeat prescriptions)
The walk-in clinic is not suitable for pregnant patients, or children under 5. They should continue to consult their usual GP or other health professional.

Examples of conditions and or issues we can’t help with:

Mental health conditions
Ophthalmology/eye issues
Dental care
Blood tests
Sick notes (fit notes) or Doctors letters
Wounds & dressings management
Pregnant patients
Requests for onward referrals, scans, expediting referrals or second opinions

Please note: If you attend with a condition that is not urgent or can be treated elsewhere, staff will redirect you to the most appropriate service.

Visiting  NHSinform.scot  for online advice on minor ailments and local services

Going to your local  pharmacy  first for minor illnesses

Calling your  dentist  for dental problems and  optician  for eye problems

Contacting your  GP practice  for routine or urgent care during normal opening hours

Calling  111 , day or night, for minor injuries and out-of-hours advice

Calling  999  or attending  A&E  in a critical emergency
