In-patient rehabilitation

Across Fife we have several in-patient rehabilitation wards within our community hospitals. These are based in Queen Margaret Hospital, Cameron Hospital, Glenrothes Hospital, Adamson Hospital and St Andrews Hospital.

What is Rehabilitation?

If you have been in the Victoria Hospital or any other hospitals and need to be discharged following surgery, an illness, injury, or stroke, you may require ongoing in-patient rehabilitation. If this is the case you will be transferred to one of our community hospitals for rehabilitation. .

The aim of inpatient rehab is to ensure that you can achieve the best possible quality of life after suffering a life-altering event. A stay in one of our rehabilitation wards will give you the best chance of regaining your health, independence, and quality of life, in a safe and properly equipped environment, until you are able to manage at home safely or within an alternative location.

Within our in-patient ward settings, you will meet several members of the multi-professional team including Consultants, Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Dietitians, Patient Flow Co-ordinators (PFC’s) and Assessment and Review Practitioners (ARP’s).

From assessment of your specific condition and difficulties a treatment programme will be undertaken that will help you to regain your mobility, functional independence, and confidence. It may also involve learning new skills, such as adaptive techniques, using equipment, using a walking aid to make thing easier.

The Physiotherapist will work with you to regain things such as muscle strength, balance & co-ordination, and mobility. The Occupational Therapist will work with you to work on your functional independence and the ability to perform everyday tasks such as dressing, bathing, meal preparation and leisure/social activities.

Throughout your stay there will be a regular co-ordinated approach to your care and regular reviews/updates regarding your progress. When required your family and you may partake in meetings to discuss your progress and to plan for your discharge. We work very closely our social care colleagues, to facilitate a safe discharge back to your own home or alternative homely setting.
