Information about the maternity and neonatal psychology service (MNP)

The Neonatal unit provides a multidisciplinary service to babies and their parents. Having contact with the Psychology team is offered to parents as part of routine care.

Having a premature or sick baby can be very stressful and frightening. Parents often benefit from having the opportunity to talk about their experiences.

Speaking with a member of the MNP team can help you work through any worries and feelings you may be having at the present time.

This can include:

  • helping to identify & understand problems early
  • preventing problems worsening
  • promoting self care
  • supporting your relationship with your baby
  • identifying other appropriate support networks

Families sometimes speak to one of our team members informally on the ward or may wish to have an arranged appointment time.

An appointment with a member of our team usually lasts for around an hour but can be shorter if preferred. Some families find it helpful to meet on one occasion, while others benefit from further contact.

The time spent with us is tailored to best suit your needs, feelings and concerns.

Please ask you nurse or doctor if you would like to speak with someone from the Maternity and neonatal psychology team.
