Making every mouthful count

Losing weight or being underweight can happen when you don’t eat enough energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. To stay healthy, it’s important to eat a variety of food and drinks that give you energy and protein.

Quick wins

Try these quick wins, to increase your energy (calories) and protein intake: 

  • Eat little and often – try small portions of meals and between meal snacks
  • Include nourishing drinks
  • Swap to full fat milk, yoghurt and cheese
  • Choose easy to eat nourishing snacks such as cheese and crackers, full fat yoghurt, mini sausage rolls or cake/pastries
  • Enrich drinks and puddings with skimmed milk powder

Milk/drinks dried skimmed milk powder add 2-4 tablespoons per pint whole milk (use this 'enriched milk' in all recipes) Protein, energy, calcium 4 heaped tablespoons 60g give 209 kcal and 21g protein
  Double cream Stir a spoonful into hot drinks  Energy 70kcal per tablespoon
Starchy foods and vegetables Butter or hard margarine Mix a knob into mashed potato, rice, pasta or melted over hot vegetables Energy 30kcal per tablespoon
  Grated cheese Add to hot vegetables, soups and potatoes protein, energy, calcium 125kcal and 7.6g per matchbox size

If an older adult has a health condition like diabetes or kidney disease, they should speak to a doctor or dietitian before making big changes to their diet.
