Play & Proprioception – Under 3’s

Proprioception is our body’s sense of where we are and how we move, even when we’re not looking. Our muscles and joints send messages to the brain to help us stay balanced, coordinated, and calm.

Children and Young People's Occupational Therapy

Published July 2025

Review July 2026

Some children may have difficulty with this. They might:

  • Be very active or always on the go
  • Trip or bump into things
  • Struggle to know how hard to push or pull

Doing activities that involve pushing, pulling, or lifting can help. These are called proprioceptive activities.

How You Can Help

Doing proprioceptive activities during the day can help your child:

  • Feel more in control of their body
  • Stay calm
  • Sleep better at night

We’ve listed some activity ideas below. Choose the ones that suit your child’s abilities and what they enjoy. Always supervise your child during these activities. Try them in short, fun sessions throughout the day—at home or nursery.

Try these activities for 10–12 weeks to see if they help. If they do, keep using them as part of your child’s daily routine.

Comfort and Calming

  • Wrap up in a duvet like a 'child sandwich'(if your child allows this)
  • Give firm hugs (only if it feels nice)
  • Pretend to be the Hulk – press gently on shoulders while standing

Kitchen and Craft Fun

  • Mix, roll, or knead during cooking
  • Squash and roll play dough

TV and Tummy Time

  • Lie on your tummy or sit on a space hopper to watch TVPlay games while lying on your tummy

Balance and Movement Games

  • Play balance games like 'Simon Says' and obstacle courses
  • Walk like animals (frog, crab, snake)
  • Sing and move to nursery rhymes (like 'Row Your Boat')

Outdoor and Active Play

  • Walk on grass, sand, or hills
  • Use push and pull toys
  • Dig and pour sand
  • Bounce on a trampoline or soft play
  • Water play
