Plastic Surgery Nursing

Our nurse-led plastic surgery service works alongside plastic surgery consultants from NHS Tayside to provide comprehensive and compassionate care.

Nursing team

What we do

We offer specialised dressing support for adults at all our hospital sites in Fife and in patients' homes where appropriate. The primary focus of the service is to provide post-operative support to plastic surgery patients who have been discharged locally from NHS Tayside and NHS Lothian, including those with burns and trauma. It's important to note that this service is not for emergencies. Any acute or urgent adult wounds and burns should be referred to NHS Tayside, while paediatric burns and wounds should be referred to NHS Lothian. The plastic surgery nursing team also offers post-operative and complex wound support to Oral Maxillofacial patients in NHS Fife.

Our dedicated team is involved in various aspects of patient care, including complex wound care, early discharge support from regional plastic surgery units, minor burn wound treatment, and assisting consultants in clinics. Our surgical nurse practitioner also performs minor surgeries for patients.

We cater to a diverse range of procedures, such as treatment for burns, hand conditions, reconstructive surgery (including post-cancer and post-trauma), limited cosmetic procedures (Scottish Government exceptional referral pathway), laser treatments, cancer care, and gender reassignment surgery (gender pathway).

Plastic surgery can be used for a variety of purposes, such as repairing abnormalities present from birth and restoring areas damaged by cancer tissue removal or serious injuries like extensive burns, trauma and hand conditions.

Plastic surgery techniques

The techniques employed in plastic surgery encompass skin grafts, skin flap surgery, tissue expansion, fat transfer or grafting, vacuum closure, and the use of prosthetic devices. Each method helps restore form and function, contributing to overall physical and emotional wellbeing.

Risks of plastic surgery

As with any surgical procedure, plastic surgery carries certain risks. These risks vary in severity based on factors such as the size of the affected area, the surgeon's experience, and the patient's overall health. Potential risks include pain, bleeding, infection, and scarring. Should you experience any unexpected post-surgery symptoms or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our plastic surgery team.
