Exploring what your voice can do

This section provides you with activities to help you to explore different aspects of your voice. These activities are designed to help you get to know your voice and learn what is can safely do, before you start to make any changes to your voice. You will find all the activities above.

Tuning in to what you are feeling and hearing is very important if you are looking to make meaningful changes to your voice. You can monitor your sound and gain a better understanding of how different parts of your voice work together to change the sound.

  • Tuning- in to your breathing – It is vital that you explore your breath support before moving on to any of the other exercises. If you do not have sufficient breath support, you may begin to tense parts of your vocal tract to compensate for this (e.g. muscles in your neck or muscles which control the vocal cords) which can cause damage to the vocal cords.
  • Tuning-in to what your vocal cords can do - This activity explores the different ways in which you can use your vocal cords.
  • Tuning-in to your pitch - This activity aims to help you understand what happens in your voice-box (larynx) when you go up and down in pitch.
  • Tuning-in to your intonation - Changing your intonation patterns (e.g. the rise and fall in your speech) may be something you wish to explore further. This activity enables you to better understand your current intonation patterns, and explore other patterns you may wish to use.
  • Tuning-in to your resonance – Some people feel more vibration coming from their chest when they speak, whereas others may feel more vibration in the throat or face. It is important to be aware of where you are initially feeling most vibration, as this can help you to monitor any movement of this vibration as you work through the rest of this resource.
  • Tuning-in to your articulation - Changing the position of your tongue or lips when you are speaking can alter the overall sound of your voice. This activity has been designed to help you tune-in to your natural articulation patterns, and explore how small changes to your articulation can change how your voice sounds.

We have helped you explore what makes a voice and how you produce your voice. You have started to explore aspects of your voice and tune into what you like/don’t like. Now let’s further explore how voice can be shaped to represent you/your authentic voice.
