Emergency surgery

Our trauma team are on hand to provide urgent care that cannot wait. An example would be surgery following an accident such as a fall which results in a broken bone.

Where will you be seen

If you’ve been involved in an accident and require immediate orthopaedic care, you’ll be referred straight to our emergency (trauma) team. Otherwise, your surgery will be planned and you’ll have an appointment date.

Our emergency service takes place in the trauma and orthopaedic department at the Victoria Hospital. If you need to stay, you'll begin your recovery in Wards 31 or 33 or you may be discharged to recover at home.  We also carry out emergency surgery procedures at out dedicated Day Surgery Unit at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline for patients requiring urgent hand, wrist or upper limb reconstructive surgery.

Non-urgent trauma patients will be put on the Virtual Fracture List and then get a phone call from a nurse to discuss a plan, such as rest and discharge.

Stage 3 | Assessment meeting

If required, you’ll be asked to attend a face-to-face clinic to discuss further steps in the management of your condition.

Stage 4 | Treatment

You may be required to return for further treatments or procedures such as injections.

Stage 5 | Follow up care

Post surgery or treatment you’ll come and see us for your check up after 6-12 weeks.
