Initially, your GP is a good point of contact for ongoing needs and services. However, if you have any urgent concerns related to your relative’s surgery, please don't hesitate to contact the ward or single point of contact hub.
It depends on the type of surgery and their individual recovery. For some planned procedures, like a day case hip replacement, we aim for them to go home the same evening. For standard hip and knee replacements, the stay is usually very short, often just one night after the surgery, with a maximum of two nights in most cases.
For day case procedures, we aim to discharge patients later the same day as their surgery. For standard hip and knee replacements, if their recovery is progressing well, they might be able to go home the day after their surgery. We will keep you updated on their progress and a more definite discharge date as they recover.
They may need help with everyday tasks initially. This could include things like preparing meals, moving around the house, and attending follow-up appointments.
Please speak to our team, and we can help you explore options for support at home. We can also direct you to their GP, who can assess their needs and potentially arrange services like additional equipment in their home.
It's normal to experience pain after surgery. We will ensure your relative receives appropriate pain relief medication to make them as comfortable as possible. We will also monitor their pain levels and adjust their medication as needed.
Recovery time varies from person to person. We will provide them with information and exercises to help with their recovery. It's important they follow the advice given by the healthcare team to ensure the best possible outcome.
Yes, it is quite common to see bruising and swelling after surgeries like hip and knee replacements. This is because during the surgery, particularly in knee replacements, the bones are impacted, which can cause significant bruising.
Your relative will have information from us on what to expect regarding bruising and swelling, possibly including visual examples. It's normal for the bruising to change over time. If you are concerned that the bruising or swelling is excessive, rapidly increasing, or accompanied by other symptoms like fever or severe pain, please contact us or their GP for advice.

Yes, if your relative is prescribed blood-thinning medication, this can increase bruising. This is something we take into account and monitor.
