Solstice

Every year towards the end of December, the North Pole is most tilted away from the Sun - this is what is known as the winter solstice.  In June, the opposite happens, the North Pole is most tilted towards the Sun - this is the summer solstice.  Once the winter solstice arrives, the days will grow longer and the nights will grow shorter until the spring equinox.  This means that from 21 December, the days will grow longer and lighter.  With the challenges of this year’s global pandemic, many of us may be feeling the strains of the past year particularly hard by now so it’s good to know that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel.
