BASICS Scotland 55

St Andrews Community Hospital recently hosted 170 second-year MBChB/BSc (Hons) Medicine students from University of St Andrews for an immersive learning day.

Delivered in partnership with the British Association for Immediate Care (BASICS) Scotland, the day focused on the fundamentals of pre-hospital emergency care.

The event provided students with a valuable introduction to the fast-paced and often unpredictable environment of first-on-scene emergency response. Through realistic, scenario-based training, students were able to apply their developing clinical knowledge in a safe but highly practical setting.

Throughout the day, students worked closely with experienced clinicians specialising in pre-hospital and remote medicine. Sessions focused on core principles of scene assessment, including hazard identification, personal and public safety, effective coordination with emergency services, and the importance of clear, structured communication.

The session not only strengthened students’ clinical understanding, but also supported the development of confidence, teamwork and decision-making skills in challenging and unpredictable circumstances.
