Preparing for your vasectomy procedure

Please note, the appointment date and time you have just received is for your vasectomy procedure. Please ensure you make all necessary arrangements.

Your appointment details are on your appointment letter. 

  • The appointment will usually last approximately 1 hour.
  • If you are unable to attend this appointment or no longer wish to have a vasectomy then please phone 01592 729 476/ 729 254 as soon as possible to reschedule/cancel.
  • If you cancel your appointment at short notice (1 week before your procedure) you will be booked for a new appointment. If you cancel your appointment at short notice for the second time, you will be removed from our waiting list.
  • If you do not attend your appointment without giving us prior notice, you will be removed from our waiting list.
  • If you have any questions, please contact us on 01592 729 476/ 729 254 as soon as possible (Mon – Fri, 9.00am – 1.00pm).

  • You will receive a survey via the Patient Hub, 14 days before your procedure, please complete this prior to attending your appointment.
  • Please ensure that you leave ample time to park and make your way to the department, as if you are late we may not be able to undertake your procedure.
  • Plan your time off – usually 2-3 days but longer if you have a more physical job
Area To Be Shaved Before Procedure

Area to be shaved before surgery

  • Shave the skin on the scrotum (sac) and around the base of the penis the night before your procedure (see picture above)
  • Shower or have a bath before the procedure
  • Do not use any lotions or creams on your skin on the day of the procedure
  • Wear tight underwear/cycling shorts to your procedure and have more at home for the following days
  • Have ice packs/frozen peas and painkillers ready at home
  • Eat and drink as normal on the day
  • Ensure you have someone to collect you after the procedure
  • Please avoid ibuprofen 24 hours before your procedure.
  • Paracetamol is safe to take for vasectomies
