How to book a vasectomy
If you would like to be considered for a vasectomy, please see your GP to request a referral to Sexual Health Fife. We will then contact you by SMS, via Patient Hub, our secure online portal, with details of your first appointment with a nurse. This will be a 30 minute pre-assessment telephone appointment. A nurse will explain the procedure to you in more detail and answer any questions you have.
This needs to be carried out regardless of any discussions which have taken place with a GP. During this telephone call we will check your medical history and your body mass index (BMI) to ensure it will be safe for you to have the procedure. If your BMI is above 35 we will not be able to add you to the vasectomy waiting list and we will not be able to perform the procedure in Sexual Health Fife. This is because a high BMI will make the vasectomy technically more difficult and carries a greater risk of complications.
If suitable to have the procedure under local anaesthetic, you will be put on the waiting list. If this is not the case, or if there is the possibility of technical difficulties during the operation, we will ask you to attend either a telephone call or a short pre-operative face to face appointment for an examination with the vasectomy doctor. Depending on the outcome of this, you will either go onto the waiting list for the procedure in Sexual Health with a local anaesthetic, or you could be referred to Urology.
Once you reach the top of the waiting list, you will be contacted by SMS, via Patient Hub, with details of the appointment and a Pre-appointment Survey (hyperlink to form) to complete for your procedure. It is important you complete the survey in advance of your procedure and you read the Preparing for your Vasectomy leafet.
Following your procedure you will be provided with a Post Vasectomy Advice leaflet and a semen sample will be required to confirm the procedure is successful. Your sample will be due 16 weeks post procedure and you will need to book an appointment directly with the laboratory (Tel No: 01592 648169).
Further information about how to book your sample appointment can be found here Post Vasectomy Semen Sample patient information.
