Emergency surgery

Our trauma team are on hand to provide urgent care that cannot wait. An example would be surgery following an accident such as a fall which results in a broken bone.

Where will you be seen

If you’ve been involved in an accident and require immediate orthopaedic care, you’ll be referred straight to our emergency (trauma) team. Otherwise, your surgery will be scheduled and you’ll be provided with a date.

Our emergency service takes place in the trauma and orthopaedic department at the Victoria Hospital. If you need to stay, you'll begin your recovery in Wards 31 or 33, the children's ward or you may be discharged to recover at home.  We also carry out emergency surgery procedures at our dedicated Day Surgery Unit at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline for patients requiring urgent hand, wrist or upper limb reconstructive surgery.

Your patient journey as an orthopaedic trauma patient

Pathway Patient

Stage 1 | Referral to service

You will be referred to the orthopaedic department by A&E, minor injuries service.

Stage 2 | Urgent assessment

As an urgent patient, you’ll be seen straight away and in many cases be admitted to the orthopaedic trauma ward for further assessment and probable surgery.

Attending for surgery

Stage 3 | Non urgent assessment

Non-urgent trauma patients who need further orthopaedic review will be added to the Virtual Fracture clinic in the following days.

Some patients do not require any further intervention or follow up after their A&E/Minor injuries attendance. Many patients can be discharged home from A&E/Minor injuries with patient information and self care management advice.

Stage 4 | Fracture clinic appointment

If required, you’ll be asked to attend a face-to-face clinic to discuss further steps in the management of your injury and or condition.

Stage 5 | Treatment and follow up care

You may be required to return for further treatments and or procedures or for a simple post surgery check up.
