Planned surgery

Pre-assessment  Referral process What to expect Consent for surgery Get set for surgery

Where will you be seen

Planned or elective surgery can be thought of as surgery aimed at improving quality of life. Our planned surgical operations will take place in the National Treatment Centre on the grounds of the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy or the Day Surgery Unit at the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline.

You will receive a letter confirming your date of surgery, this will provide you with all the information that you need.

Your patient journey

Stage 1: Referral and decision-making
You’ll be referred to Trauma and Orthopaedics by your GP. After discussing your options with your consultant, you’ll decide that your best option is surgery.

Stage 2: Pre-operative assessment
Before your surgery, you may need to attend a pre-operative assessment appointment. This makes sure that you’re healthy enough for the procedure.

Stage 3: Attending surgery
You will be scheduled for surgery. Please follow the pre-surgery instructions and arrive on time.

Stage 4: Your hospital stay
You may be required to stay in hospital for up to 2 days while you start recovery. You may be discharged the same day if you have completed your rehabilitation aims.

Stage 5: Recovering at home
Once you’re back at home, follow the recommended physiotherapy exercises to help speed up your recovery.

Stage 6: Follow-up appointment
After your surgery, you’ll have a follow-up appointment a few weeks later to check on your progress. Occasionally, with minor procedures, you may be discharged back to your GP or Practice Nurse for a wound review.
