Mr Muhammad Adeel Akhtar
Research and Innovation Champion Spotlight
Meet Mr Muhammad Adeel Akhtar, who joined NHS Fife in February 2020 as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. Mr Akhtar is dedicated to fostering growth in research and innovation, focusing on culture, capacity, capability, and communication. He has been actively involved in research, contributing to NIHR-funded trials. He has served as the Principal Investigator for the “CRAFFT Trial” and as Co-Principal Investigator for the “FAME,” “SCIENCE,” “MOTION,” and “REPORT” trials. Currently, he serves as the Principal Investigator for an industry-funded, multicentre, international trial on a new acetabular cup system for hip replacement.
Mr Akhtar has completed an NRS fellowship on the “Role of Digital Health in Obese Patients with End-Stage Lower Limb Arthritis.” He plans to disseminate the findings and implement the proposed changes through innovative practices. To harness collaboration, he has initiated a monthly gathering called the “Fife Orthopaedics Breakfast Innovation Club.” This forum encourages a multidisciplinary approach involving various team members, including physiotherapists, orthopaedic trainees, and consultants, to explore innovative ideas for improving patient care. Some of the projects being developed include the “Remote Delivery of Escape Pain Programme,” “Understanding the Challenges and Opportunities of New Weight Loss Medications,” and “Exploring the Benefits of Green and Sustainable Theatres in Fife Orthopaedics,” along with efforts to enhance the well-being of orthopaedic teams.
