Respiratory physiotherapy

Respiratory Physiotherapy aims to assess your respiratory condition and give appropriate advice and treatment so you can best manage your respiratory condition.

You can see us as an outpatient or during an inpatient stay. You will either be referred through the admitting ward, GP or through Respiratory clinics.

You may be referred into Respiratory Outpatient Physiotherapy Team if you have a chronic lung condition and have difficulty clearing phlegm from your lungs.

You will be supplied information via the post, which will give you the tools to effectively clear your chest, as well as being invited to attend one of our online classes. This is not compulsory but gives more information on effective chest clearance.  If this is not appropriate for your circumstances, you may then be offered a face to face appointment.

You may also be asked to attend Respiratory Physiotherapy Outpatients if you have been diagnosed as having a breathing pattern disorder. We will assess your breathing pattern and then provide breathing exercises and relaxation techniques in attempt to re-establish a more normal breathing pattern.

There are a number of groups within Fife and Scotland that support people with Chronic Lung Conditions. These groups can provide information, resources as well as online and face to face support groups. Please see the links below

We support people with lung conditions, including:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Asthma
  • Altered or dysfunctional breathing patterns
  • Chronic Cough
  • Breathlessness

We work with you to create a treatment plan to support your breathing, lung function and physical activity. This may include airway clearance techniques, breathing exercises, exercise programmes, and manual devices.

We also support people following surgery, and during/after a stay in the Intensive Care Unit. We provide a 24 hour on-call service for those whose condition deteriorates. See our InSpire pages.
