Your hospital journey

Coming into hospital, whether planned or as an emergency can be daunting. We will work with you to improve your health and well being so that you are able to return home as quickly as possible. This page provides information about the importance of staying active during your hospital stay, suggestions of what to bring in with you to hospital, and how we can work together to help achieve your goals and get you home sooner.

One of the myths about being a patient in hospital is that you must stay in bed.  In fact, keeping as active as possible during your hospital stay is better for you.

Why is it important?

Staying as active as possible whilst in hospital can help maintain muscle strength and fitness, and helps you to remain as independent as possible.

Being immobile can lead to additional health issues, such as infections, pressure sores, and can increase your risk of blood clots.

What can you do?

  1. If you feel able to, try to stand up and walk – this can be around the ward or to use the bathroom.
  2. Make sure to use your normal walking aid, and let the team know if you do not have the aid in hospital with you.
  3. Try to do the things that you usually do at home, such as washing and dressing, and sitting out of bed for mealtimes.

If you are finding it difficult to maintain your normal functional level, nursing staff may provide assistance and if required will refer you to the Physiotherapy and/or Occupational Therapy team.

What should you bring into hospital with you?

Exercises

You may be given an exercise programme during your stay. Below you will see video and picture exercise programmes. It is important to complete these out-with physiotherapy sessions.

Going Home

Working closely with you and other members of the multi-disciplinary team, we will work towards a common discharge destination. This could be rehabilitation within your home, referral to Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, moving to one of our rehabilitation hospitals, or transferring to a care home.
